My hopes and dreams for this project

My aim is for this project to be a shining example of what is possible through module designed architecture. A new horizon. Also, it is beautifully mitigating the public/private space located in the flea market area, and finding site specific solutions to help the space reach its potential. The building should make its surroundings potentialize, and vice versa.

The modular housing will be a symphony of movement between the construction site, the road, the building frame and to wherever else the module is destined to be. The frame itself will be site specific and potentialize the space. The building will acknowledge the ‘cage’ connotation and keep moving. Through beautiful design it is possible to break down these uninformed ideas. The frame may even just offer up a question about ‘caged’. The language of the frame is to support the modules, physically and programmatically, making the modules part of the cage and even the network of other modules that co-habit the space.

The frame will entice public interest through the ground plane, leading to a ‘secret’ public/private interstitial space inside of the building block. The broad idea for the site would be to foster harmony between the buildings and create a ‘bigness’ in the space by working together to break down the barrier of the wall to mandate private areas. The harmony would extend past aesthetic or programmatic, it would extend into every individual by feeling part of the block community.

This extends into the core thought of the individual which this project is studying. The modular clearly gives a sense of ownership from the physical unit and further solidifying the feeling that inside the walls is my space. This is pushed even more by a change in structure upon entering, down to not physically sharing a wall or floor with your neighbor. A counterpoint to this is the question of how to mitigate a feeling of ownership in a city where you can feel so tiny, and on the other side encourage or maybe just avail an option for community togetherness. On that note, another layer of individual satisfaction is in the ‘choice’, the choice for where you place your unit, the choice of what it looks like, what it will contain, the layout. But how to do that placed against how you make it economically viable. How to make the finer things really not require money.
