Hey, love the podcast, keeps me in the know about things going on in Charlotte.
As far as 50/50, for me it is about practicality. Traditionally the man pays for everything and offers protection. In return the woman keeps the house neat, cooks and rears the kids. In my situation we split everything 50/50 in our marriage financially. We separate chores evenly as well. I handle outside lawncare and repairs as well as any plumbing, electrical, etc in the interior. I answer the door, make sure security systems are running etc. She handles laundry and most of grocery shopping. We kind of spilt cleaning. We kinda eat out, cook randomly with no real role assigned.
Currently we both have our careers and own businesses on our mind and do not have kids yet. So the logic there is that we operate as independent adults in our own finances but we do have a joint account for house bills. We work as a team so that we still have our own funds to spend on our hobbies. Now, when we do have kids we have talked about the dynamic changing to a one income household where she takes on more traditional roles.
To me it makes no sense for a grown adult to put their feet up while I work simply because they are female. Especially now a day where work is not dangerous and she actually is in a field (Fin Tech) that pays more that mine (Architecture). It is surprising to hear people desire to be taken care of financially without really offering anything other than their presence in return. It is a conundrum for the modern woman I guess. Housework is seen as backwards to many that want this life. I do understand people are allowed to dream and have goals but this doesn't seem realistic at all.
The facts are the facts, 42k (average black man income) is hard to live on and male dominated careers pay less and less. Even in my field the more senior architects have to have dual incomes to keep their lifestyle up. There is no reason for man to kill himself with working and have no hobbies so he can fund another adults entire life.
It is an interesting conversation, and it is interesting to see the real outcomes and sentiment related to women truly having equal financial standing.
Thanks
